Building the Foundations of Loziba Wildlife Reserve: Progress on the Fence Line

At Loziba Wildlife Reserve, every meter of fence erected is a step closer to creating a sanctuary where wildlife can thrive in safety and harmony alongside local communities. As the reserve begins to take shape, we are proud to share the progress made on one of the most vital components of our project: the perimeter fence.

60km of Fencing: Nearing the Finish Line of Phase A

Phase A of our fencing project covers a total of 60 kilometres. To date, we have completed roughly 50 kilometres, leaving just 10 kilometres to go. This progress is no small feat, especially when you consider the immense challenges our teams have faced on the ground.

Navigating Nature’s Obstacles

Building a fence in the heart of the wild is nothing like putting up a boundary in the suburbs. Our crews, made up of a mix of experienced project managers and local community members have been navigating treacherous terrain, thick bushveld, and steep, rocky areas that require both brute strength and precision. Heavy rains have added to the difficulty, turning the ground into slippery, inaccessible mud tracks that bring work to a standstill on occasions. Not to forget the constant battle with flat tires—our teams now joke that puncture repair kits are more valuable than gold out here.

But perhaps the most disheartening challenge is the deliberate damage caused by poachers, who have repeatedly cut through freshly installed fencing. Despite these setbacks, our resolve remains unshaken and the team continue to make progress.

Community Empowerment: More Than Just a Fence

This fence is not just about keeping animals in—it is also about uplifting people. Loziba’s fencing project has already created jobs for over 100 people from nearby communities, transforming lives where employment opportunities were once scarce.

These are not just temporary jobs. Workers are receiving specialized training and skills that can support long-term employment and development. Some community members have used their wages to build their first homes—something many never imagined possible before this project began.

Conservation at the Heart of It All

At the core of this effort is a powerful conservation goal: protecting the wild elephants currently roaming the area. These elephants face a dire future—marked for eradication due to increasing human-wildlife conflict. By completing the fence and establishing the reserve, Loziba will provide a safe haven where these elephants can live freely and securely.

But that is not all. The fence is also paving the way for the reintroduction of rhinos to this landscape—a critical step toward restoring the ecological balance and reclaiming lost biodiversity.

Looking Ahead

With 10 kilometres left in Phase A, we are closer than ever to securing a future for both wildlife and people. Every stake driven into the ground, every bush cleared, and every skill taught is a testament to what can be achieved when conservation and community walk hand in hand.

The fence is just the beginning—but it is a powerful symbol of the new legacy being built at Loziba Wildlife Reserve.
